i am new to all of this aquarium stuff and just got a 75g from a friend(kept a lot of the water so i think it should only take maybe 2 weeks to cycle?). i want to put a couple of large, colorful, and aggressive fish in there that are social and swim around frequently as well. i was reading through some forums and saw things about cichlids, oscars, and convicts. what is the difference between all of these? i would like to put some bright blue aggressive fish if that is possible. are some cichlids more aggressive than others?

if you take out water you don't start a new cycle ou just take out water. the good bacteria dosn't live in the water but it lives on on the decorations, the tank, and gravel. so you dont need to cycle your tank agen if hes had fish and water in there wen you bought it. oscars and convicts are bolth cichlids and they have tones of differences.

As said above, Convicts and Oscars are types of Cichlids. Oscars grow MUCH larger then Convicts, both can be aggressive. Convicts are very hardy and easy to breed.

You won't find any "bright blue agressive fish" that will fit well with either Oscars or Convicts. And yes some are more aggressive then others.

A 75gal is a good size to start with cichlids. Now you must determine if you want to go for South/Central American cichlids (Oscars/Convicts) or African cichlids (more of your colorful "bright blue" cichlids).

so, the south and central american cichlids are more aggressive and larger than the african cichlids? at my lfs i saw some of these: Tropical Fish for Freshwater Aquariums: Electric Blue African Cichlid

i really like the looks of them, but i'm not really sure if they will be that aggressive or large. my friend has a pair of pink oscars. he doesnt know what kind and i really like the "attitude" of them and how they swim right by each others sides.

No, not always...just all depends on the species. Overall i'd say the SA/CAs get larger then Africans yes...but again Cichlids as a group range from 1 inch to 3 feet...so wide variety of sizes and aggression levels.

You could fit a pair of oscars in your 75gal (IMO), but you couldn't have anything else with them. As for the Electric blue, like the site says they will get up to the 8 inch range. But its generally not a good idea to mix African cichlids and SA/CA cichlids, so you should choose which direction you want to go in.
