Looks like flourite or other plant substrate to me Pure :)

Just wondering if your going to make an effort to raise any of the fry up Avalon. I would think it may be difficult to get rid of a few hundred Jags lol

Sorry guys...haven't been meaning to neglect! I've been super busy with work, the chat, and a bit of RnR when I can get it.

The eggs did hatch, with very few unfertilized eggs. That's a good thing :D The fry hugged the bottom for about 5 days while sucking down their yolk sac, then became free swimming. It was kind of funny, because in my neglect/fear of the tank, they would get sucked up into the filter and spat back out...still alive. For a while, I thought it was a game for them! My jags became extremely mean...if I walked within a 5 foot radius, they were at the glass flaring their gills at me. I tried to clean the glass of the algae with a magnetic algae cleaner, and they would beat the crap out of it while it went back and forth! If I stuck my hands above the tank, such as to try to feed them, they (he) would jump out of the water at them!

The fry have been doing well, but I've probably lost half of them. I imagine they crossed into the Midas' territory and became snacks. I've had that happen before. Natural selection imo. I mean, wth was I going to do with 300 fry? I really only want the smart ones! The parents have really calmed down quite a bit now. I was able to get my hands in the tank to give it a good cleaning yesterday, and while my male jag was suspicious, he decided to allow me to tidy up his house a bit.

All I have in that tank is a Midas, the Jag pair & their fry, and a pleco. The pleco's hanging with the Midas atm. My midas is a big sweetie! He let's me clean his side of the tank anytime. He's not very aggressive, but always likes to act all scary when the jags flare at him through the plastic grating (divider). I have seen him defend himself and his territory, and he does a good job. He's never had a wound in his life!

The substrate is composed of 90lbs Flourite and 50 lbs plain gravel. 100% planted tank gravel in a 5' tank = expensive. You gotta cut that stuff and cover it in plants! Heh, you should see it now. Earth moving cichlids + substrate = 10" substrate wall in the front of the tank...hehehe...they don't realize it's supposed to slope the other way. :D

I'll try to get some pics soon! Hopefully tomorrow, as work will have slowed down a bit.
