A lot of comonly found aquarium plants have difficulty growing in the harder water that is commonly found with rift lake setups. There are some that will work, and C-man pretty much covered the best ones for your setup.

I just wouldn't expect anything like dutch style.;)

I tried anubias and java fern in my mbuna tank for 2 weeks now. My fishes got 'frightened' initially when they saw 2 greeny stuff 'intruding' their territories.
I have since removed the plants. I personally think that if you have already got fishes in the tank, getting them used to the new addition to their environment is important.
BTW, my anubias didn't do that well in the mbuna tank since I have crushed corals as substrate and the water is quite hard as well.

Cichlidian - I've seen lots of planted Rift Lake tanks and they use anubias and vallis in the main.

Java moss and vallisneria gigantea are good for hard water with higher than neutral pH. Vallis can make the best of any light by sending leaves across the surface.
