Depends which cichlids have got your interest. Also it is not nessicary to remove all the plants out of your tank. While some will most deffintaly destroy them, others will welcome the additional cover and teritory that they can provide.

I've seen barbs kept as dither fish for Malawi tanks, and clown loaches for bottem feeders. So i would assume you'd be ok with most of the african cichlids, provided they fit into your tank/setup.

You should be able to get away with keeping them with the smaller SA/CA dwarfs like apistos, rams, etc. Since they can fit into a lot of "community" type settings.

You can keep them will all kinds of cichlids, but W Africans and medium S and C americans would be the best fit. Any others is a bit risky.
They're too big/burly for rams and most apistos - think firemouths, kribs and so on.

i think a rts would be ok with yellow labs, as yellow labs are'nt really that aggressive. but when you get to the real aggressive africans i think the rts would get killed.
