I'm currently cycling a tank for cichlid use. (My first cichlid tank). There will be no live plants in the tank, only rock. Should I still leave the lights on for 10 to 12 hours a day, or will this only encourage algae growth? I was thinking of keeping the lights on for only four hours a day, but would this be detrimental to the fish?

Thanks.

Regards.

After reading my post, it seems to be a fairly retarded question I am asking. What I am basically trying to ask is if it is still necessary to keep the lights on for so long when there are no plants in the tank. The fish will not be in darkness if the lights are not on during the daylight hours (13 hours of daylight for around 320 days of the year here).

Regards.
