i am interested in starting a community tank, most likely a 75 gallon. i am still researching different fish to see what might work well together.

do you know of any cichlids which could be ok in a community tank?

what about kribensis, german blue rams, or cockatoo dwarf cichlids? i read that they are less aggressive than most cichlids.

if you have any links, book, or magazine suggestions that might help with my research, id greatly appreciate it.

please and thank you!

all of the cichlids you mention are suitable for a community set-up, it is up to you to decide.

have you considered angels and/or festivum? these 2 species are sympatric in their natural ranges and could make a nice community set-up in your 75 gallon. the rams would do well also.

There's a stack of them beyond these, of which some are usually available, and some just turn up every now and again. The asiest way is to go to your lfs and see what's around, then research them all, except malawi and lake tang, pretty much all out except maybe shell dwellers.
You could also go for a 'larger community setup' with big tetras, barbs, pim catfish and fireemouths or blue acaras for example. Community need not be super small fish

I'd second the Keyhole Cichlids. Have had mine a couple of months now and they're very peaceful fish.

I'd be wary of Kribensis though. I had to take my pair back to the shop after they decided to run riot in my tank. No occupant was spared the run around!

awww...i really liked the kribensis too.

i think i may just consider getting a species tank later for cichlids, i have a friend with a beautiful tank of all cichlids, and it was one of the things that first got me interested in settin up a tank in the first place.

but for now, i think for my first tank i will consider the keyholes, rams, and angels to add to the community.

thank you all for your advice!

i have tried doing more research, but many of the enthusiast websites list their fishes by species name...also, the books are expensive!!...all those beautiful color pages. if any of you have advice on some good general sources of information for a newbie, please and thank you!
