Cleaning a used bio-wheel

To make a long story short, I got a penguin bio-wheel 350B from a friend. Thing is, one of the bio-wheels has a blue mark on the corners of three pleats. It seems like some kind of stain to me, I have no idea what it is. After scrubbing with my fingers it wouldnt come off, I asked him and he said he got it like taht.
Now, my concern is if it is something unaqarium say paint of something, it could leak and possibly be of harm. These filters are the new line and their replacement wheels are 10 dollars each.
Does anyone know how I should clean these? How about just cutting the little section off?

if its dry and its tiny, i dont think it would hurt anything.

Just to be safe, I actually took it apart, cut out the tiny piece and put it back, it works fine i think.

It should be fine, its just a house for good bacteria, and you wont have as much but as long as it still spins, you should be fine

hopefully. Its splashing is very loud though, the tank is filled. Hopefully it will die down soon?

Not sure, i dont think it will, i would think its better just to get a whole new bio whell, if its splashing and bothering you

is the water line all the wa to the top where the water comes in? if not thats probably whats splashing. the bio-wheel should move smoothly. if not, try a drop of olive oil on the axles.

what if you lose your bearings for it? Is there an easy replacement? or do I need to purchase a new wheel?

I just run it without the bearings..Never really noticed a difference.

You can run it w/o the bearings? Call marineland at 1800 322 1266 to order replacement parts. Bearings should be cheap and easy to find.
And yes, the water is up where it should be, I have an aquaclear running on the same tank and its silent.
