Cleaning sand

I no this sounds abit stupid but how do you clean sand?????

You couldnt scoop it out and put it in a sieve because it would just fall through the sieve.
And you couldnt use a syphon because the syphon would suck up all the sand and you would have none left

So how can it be cleaned??

i have a 4ft tank with sand and a very messy common pleco.i find using a catch net to scoop up the debris the most effective way.hope it helps. sam x
