a few weeks ago i had finally got all of my clown loaches to come out after having them hide for several months and almost never seeing them.

i did quite a few things to make them more happy like raising the water temps slihgtly, doing a weekly or bi-weekly water change, increasing air, adding more plants. i wasn't really certain what did it but they started comming out and schooling for hours on end.

the same thing happened again a week ago. they would just hide all of the time and i would never see them.

i think i found the connection between the two times. udring both intrances, the clowns had very cramped hiding places where 3-5 of them could all cram themselves into. these were very small areas, somtimes an inch in diameter and very dark. the first time i fixed this by breaking a piece of driftwood apart. the second time i had added a plastic fake tree stump. after removing that stump (took 10 minutes to get the 7 loaches out of it) i come down this morning and see all of my loaches schooling together.

this is some sort of loach behavior. i don't know if it's beacuse my dominant loach does it so they all follow or if it's an instinct. either way, it's something that i thought i should share.

they still have many hiding places right now. i'd say more than half a dozen where they cannot be seen, however, none of these places are completly dark or very small.

when they are schooling, they may just be mucking around or maybe looking for somemore cramped places. this may be a bit selfish but i'd like to see them every once in a while, even if they aren't perfectly happy. when schooling like this however, i think they are pretty close to it.

i'll be setting up a web cam and i'll get some video recordings of the schooling for you guys in the near future.

here's some clown loach fotage i just shot. it's 2.89mb and it's in divx 5.05 format. you can download the video codec and a divx player at divx.com.

please save the file, don't stream it. it's on my isp's webspace and there is a 300mb transfer limit so please download the file once so others can view it. if you download it, you can play it as many times as you want from your own drive.

right click and use 'save as' please.

hehehe yeah them crazy ol' loaches:D they love jamming as many of themselves as they can into a tiny area(loaches should go on spring break, they'd win all the "see how many of you can pack into this car/tent/phonebooth!" games:p) especially when they first get released into a tank. mine did they exact same thing for about 3 weeks before they went into groups of two and three, and another 2 weeks before they all started schooling together.

i also saw a few skirmishes between the two largest loaches in the school(establishing the pecking order i guess:)) but now they all swim happily.

i'm glad you liked it. my ocmputer desk is right beside the fishtank. about 6' from the fish thank there is a 10 foot bay window. this puts lots of glare on the fish tank and the only time i can see it properly is at night or the evening. the only issue is i working in the nights and evenings.

i rigged up an old SVHS camera to a composite cord to a tv input card. it allows me to watch the fish during the day. i am working on finding software that puts this on the web so i can watch them at work. if you know of anything like that (free only, i think paying for software is wrong) then lemmeknow.

Most of the software out there only works for web cams, although I am not sure whether your VHS acts as a web cam through the TV card.
thanks lotus. i checked both of those out. the first one doesn't seem to support still pics. the second one support still pics BUT can be taken at 1 hour (max) intervals or anytime there is movement. for a fish tank, that's either never or contantly.

active webcam 4.0 has a great picture taker. it has it's own http server and can update a picture at a specified ammount of time. if i can just get that in a single and hopefully free program, i'd be set.

ok, i finally got the perfect program. it's WebCam2000. it's free, 500kbytes or so, has an http server and will update a still picture once a second.

i'll generally run this while at work. since it'll be unsupervised most of the time, i'd prefer to keep it private so i won't be giving out the link to my http server.

my big loach likes to dig holes. he lifts up 1gram pebbles and moves them aside. he does this with his mouth and will clear 5-6 of them when making a hole. i'll record him doing that soon enough.

Yes, I have seen the loaches doing this too, although we have gravel. They will sometimes work together to get to whatever it is they're after :p I have even seen a loach swimming across the tank with a shrimp pellet in his mouth to take it somewhere quieter to eat :D

I hope one of the programs works for you.
