quick question...do i have a male and female convict?
heres pics
PS: just got them tonight, and they were just released into the tank, so far the "male" seems to have his territory all set, and the female is still trying to decide where to go. so far, no agression! :D

thats BOTH of them, i think the female is the one with the red belly

but just to make sure, is that even a convict?!

THANKS!

Yup you have a male and a female convict. The female is the one with the red belly. Red belly means she is ready and once the male and female become good friends you will have 100's of fry's. I have 2 pairs and ohh my god. They are worse then rabbits. Well enjoy your convicts.

YAYAYAYAY i dont even care if they breed that much, i just want to see it once or twice, since ive never succesfully bred egg layers, ive only done livebearers. if i get to many fry, i will feed them to my mbunas hehe

ohh thats cruel. poor babies! dont worry you will definetly breed these egg layers. I have about 14 fry that have grown to about 1 inch. while as for the second pair i have hmm let say about 100 fry. I feel sorry for them so i had to separate them from my other cichlids. I cant feed them to my other fish. They are so tiny and cute. And once i see how the parents fight for them. It just breaks my heart!

i dont really have anywhere for her to lay the eggs, so i might add a small flower pot tomorow. just so she has the option if she wants it lol. its funny what we are willing to do for our fish

Yup add the pot that will help. I have not added any pot though. I have a lot of rocky caves so they have a natural place to lay eggs. That is a real funny thing you said. It is so true what we are willing to do for our fish. i know i have done more then i should but they are under our care and they should be treated like kings and Queens.

UPDATE! :D
well, i think they have paired. i took out the pictus cats because the cons both have become extremely agressive towards them. they have been flaring at eachother, and waving their bodies against eachother, their vents are out and they follow eachother around all the time. they also have dug out a few places, so i think they are trying to decide where to set up shop. the only other fish in their is a small 2inch pl*co. they dont really bother him. the cons have coloured up nicelly, the female has darkened considerably, so has the male. this is good news!

From what you have written it seems to me that they are ready. If they have become extremely aggressive then look for eggs in the tank. After they lay their eggs. it takes about 3-4 days before you can see any fry. freshly hatched eggs dont need to eat atleast for 3-4 days until they consume the yolk. The cons even become very aggresive to us. I cant clean my 55 g tank where the cons live. The other divided part is easy to clean. I would suggest you move the 2 inch pleco from the tank. Its not if they bother him or not. If by mistake he comes to their area. He is in big risk. Just to be safe!

awww too bad. Well i guess you will have to wait then. Well as for the courting convicts. The male becomes darker in color blackish and as for the female her red belly becomes more brigther and promenent. They flare at each other in the begining and when they have layed eggs they just stay together the whole time. Like a happy married couple. I am already tired of my convicts. Now i am thinking of giving away my females so i can keep 2 males. No hassel of breeding i cant take it anymore.
