I found some drift wood on edisto island and would like to use it in my tank. How can i tell if its aged enough not to rot in the tank? Its old and dark on the outside, but i dont know how soft the wood is on the inside. Anyone got any advise?

I would only be concern about wood rotting if it gets exposed to air. If underwater, I dont think that if will rot.

Scrub the wood, boil it, set it out to dry in the sun (sun bleaching) if you don't come from a humid region. If you're worried about tannins possibly leaching into your tank, soak your wood for a week in a bucket of dechlorinating water, changing the water every day. Personally I just stay away from rotting wood all together and only collect wood that's been well bleached by sea-water and sun (I live near plenty o' beaches<G>).
