Color question for convicts

I just got 5 convicts at a locally owned pet store. The biggest is about an two inches. They do not have the contrasty white and black stripes like I have seen before, but rather grayish with darker grayish stripes. One, the only male I think, barely has stripes at all. They are really rather dull, visually.

Is this just the way they will always be, or are they still juvenile and not have their full coloring? Will good food enhance their coloring?

The day after I got them I went to a national pet store and they had the most beautiful convicts. I guess I'm jealous.

They are still a bit young yet. As they grow larger, they will gain more color. Also, better food will help. Just about all the fish I purchase begin looking much better on a proper diet rather than the LFS's. Good quality flakes along with some frozen bloodworms is a good start.
