Common plec not eating algae

So I bought a common plec about 2 days ago and all he seems to do it poop all over the place.

He hasn't touched any of the algae.

Should I take him back and try for a better agle eater?

Common plecos really aren't the best solution for algae, and yes, they seem to put out more waste than they consume. What kind of algae is it that you're trying to get rid of?

I haven't feed the fish in 2 days, with the hopes that the algae eater will get hungery soon, but I am not going to make my fish suffer any longer they have to eat today.

Yeah...most plecos won't eat brown algae...bristlenoses will, or ottos.

don't listen to the store people...common plecos are cheap, and stores are constantly overpopulated with them...so they always tell people they NEED them.

Cheap!!! They charged me $8.99. I am taking him back. I am going to tell time that he is to big, or mean, or something, or maybe hey you lied to me that is why you should take him back!

lol, no we didn't lie. If you can try and get a bristlenose pleco as these guys will clear up your brown algae in no time.

Plecos can be very fragile when you first buy them. Was it a young specimen you bought? Did it look healthy in the store? Plecos that have sunken bellies will never get into the habit of eating properly and should be avoided.

But like someone mentioned before, Plecos aren't really that great for clearing algae. Uneaten food and other crap? Sure.

8.99 for a common pleco?? goodness gracious. I'd expect to pay that for a bristlenose or other more rare pleco that is a few inches long. I paid 3.99 for my rubbernose pleco...but he is TINY. I paid 7.50 for my bristlenose but got him 1/2 off because the store was having a sale...regular $15
