Yes that's a nice mix for a community, just be aware if you have female gupppies and platies as well as males they'll reproduce like hell. Also, corys like to be in groups of 6 or more.

Quick question, is this your first tank, and is the tank already set up? If not, make sure you read up on cycling your tank properly - Missfishy has a good website which is easier to follow than most explanations.

Potentially yes, but in the past I've had well over 50 survive into adulthood in a probably overstocked community tank (including, amonst others, a good few angels). It's really luck of the draw. Easiest thing to do would be to just have male guppies, platies don't reproduce quite as fast, and you could ask at your LFS whether they'd potentially take fish off your hands should they reproduce, I know mine do!
