Remember convicts are called convicts for a reason. Very aggressive, and unless you have a large tank you may be hard pressed to find a suitable tank mate. I did keep two in a 29 gallon with two plecos for a while without any problems though.

20 gallons is good for convicts, and once they've paired usually that's it.
I don't know how big a territory a wild convict pair will protect, but it's bigger than most peoples tanks, and that pretty well means anything else in there is in there for sufference, or is so big they're scared.

How about other fish with 2 paired up-convicts in a 55 gallon? Would lots of cover allow more fish? I'd like to get something colorful to compliment the black and white convicts.

I have a 3 inch yellow gourami in a temporary tank with 3 slightly smaller female convicts and he's holding his own quite well - not a mark on her and they've all been together about 3 weeks. I'm not brave enought to put him in the big tank with the pair though - too pretty to potentially get beat up.
