i have just been given a 24" tank with 8 mollies that are 1 month old. however i also have a hexagon tank left by one of my daughters with one goldfish in it. my question is can i put the the goldfish in with the molliies. iknow this sounds a stupid question to ask, but bare with me as i am new to this fishkeeping lark.

arent most goldfish capable of handling 75-78 degree water, a temp that the mollies wouldnt mind and the godlfish could handle also?
they are compatible in their non-aggressiveness <is that a word?>

Within that temperature range, both fish will survive but , IMO, I wouldn't put goldfish with mollies.   I tried that in the past when I was younger and it seems to me that the tropical fishes were always dying probably secondary to diseases acquired by the goldfish.  I am not sure if you mean goldfish feeders that you can buy by the dozens but they do live in pretty poor conditons and do carry a lot of diseases.

I agree with dattack.  Goldfish and Koi are coldwater fish and mollies are tropical, they should never be mixed.  Just ask the lfs how poorly the goldfish feeders do in the summer months compared to the cooler months and that should tell you that they don't belong in warm tanks.

Not only are goldfish cold water fish, they are also "dirty" fish.  Now, If you keep goldfish, I dont mean that in a bad way.  What I mean is that the golfishs' waste is different than that of tropical fish.  Im sure you guys know what I mean.  And this difference in waste products ok...Fish Poop...is not healthy for the tropical fish.

I recently proved this to myself.  I have a 38 gallon that housed female bettas.  i had a small fish pond outside on my front porch.  It got a leak so I had to put my 2 shubunkins in my bettas aquarium.  Several of the females died after I did this.  :(  My mistake.  Dont let it happen to you!

thats a good point
the waste of a goldfish is different than a tropical fish
the goldfish can survive or are resistant to diseases that tropical fish would die from
but
their temperment are compatible
i wouldnt keep any kind of goldfish with my beloved discus or tetras or even my guppies
