Conditioning salt

I was told at the LFS that all fish benefit from a little salt in the water. My question is how often do I add salt weekly/monthly? Should I just add it to the water I am about to add to the tank during a normal water change, or should I add it directly to the tank itself? Any help would be appreciated!

you really dont need to use aquarium salt in a FW tank. personally, i wouldn't bother. i've never used salt in my tanks.
