it depends on what u want (mini-reef or fish only)...how much $$$ u have, etc...u will probably have to get a protein skimmer, get rid of gravel for sand (try giving the gravel to a beginning aquarist!), and a whole lot of other stuff...luckily most equipment is transferrable

First step is research. Get online to different websites and read forums and articles. Also purchase a good book before starting. My recommendation would be The New Marine Aquarium, by Mike Paletta.
I would start with a aquarium bigger then 20 gallons and under 125 gallons. I also recommend live rock and a protein skimmer.
Buy tank raised specimens unti your experience has increased, then you can start with some of the wild caught fish.

Read a informative book on the Marine hobby. Get a protein skimmer, some quality live rock, and a list of easy to keep fish you want.
