I would like to convert my 55 gallon to a cichlid tank. Could any of the cories stay? Would I have to change the substrate to sand? Just want to see what I have to do before I do it. I am getting rid of one of my Angel fish right now and I do realize the others would have to go too.

Thanks

Sorry but none of you fish would be able to stay with Cichlids. I would start another tank if want to keep your Cories. You dont have to have sand, the gravel will be fine. I would look around at some of the other posts on Cichlids. Good Luck!!

Kll1221: You all ready have a cichlid tank with the angels. J/K but anyway What type of cichlids there are many different kinds. African(several types), Central American and South American? That really helps on what you can keep from your old tank.

Sand or Gravel more of a personal preferance. Most Africans like sand or small gravel so that they can move it where they want and make nests and what not. But either can work.

If you could say what type you want that would help everyone out a bit

LoL not sure this is why I am asking. I am in rural country so can't get anything to exotic. I guess South American as I believe that is what my angelfish is. (I just gave away one angelfish *cry*) This guy said he would buy the rest of my fish if I wanted to get rid of them.

I will add my two cents :) . I slowly started converting my 46gal to mostly cichlids from more of a community type tank. (My boyfriend said little fish suck and wanted something more exciting.....oh well) Anyway right now I have a total mismash of cichlids because in the beginning I relied on the info from the lfs. My point is when I started putting in the cichlids, I left in my 2 cory cats. Some time went by (fish were yellow labs, blue socolofi, krib, angel, 2 rams, and something called a curviceps. One day I was looking at the cories and they had no fins! I mean, at all. I am surprised they could even swim. So out they came and they are now doing fine in the 10 gal with the guppies and their fins are growing back. I'm not sure who the 'picker' or 'pickers' were, but I wouldn't put cories with any of those fish I listed.

Angels are cool wife has a 55 with them in. we also have a pair of west african pelv. taen. moliwe. there also with a pair of zamora woodcats. and have had no problems for almost 4 months but i am predicting a bit soon. the pelv. are showing signs they are getting ready to pair up. lots of quivering going on. tetras, cories, and umm drawing blank here, would be a good addition to the tank also. look up where the angels are from and do a biotope with other fish that live in the region. 1 of the cichlid sites i visit has a coockie cutter formula that puts fish in that goes with them. cichlid-forum.com give it a try and see what it gives you. might be all cichilds though been awhile since i used it... oh and plecos of all kinds would be good

wow these new angels so far are doing really well. Time will tell when the y get older if they will work out or not. I am prepared for that. I was nervous about adding the babys in with the grown one but he seems to like the babys they all school together. I hope I get at least one pair up.

If there ends up to be one angel that doesn't pair with another will that mean trouble?
