Twenty Gallons for a breeding pair is commonly said to be ok for only a single pair of convicts. Any thing else in such a small tank would really be hit or miss, with more miss than anything I would think.

From what I have heard, they form an everlasting pair. They choose their pair also. Then again, they can only choose from what you give them. Also regular (Zebra) convicts can breed with pink convicts. The females are slightly smaller and have orange on them.

i wouldnt add 2 older convicts together... ive tried it a few times and they just dont breed, they fight... if you buy a pair of young ones of about an inch or 2 in length, then they probably will breed, but i wouldnt count on older fish breeding unless they have been together as a pair for awhile..

convicts can get to be 6'' long... so a 20g is ok for a few years.. mine only grew about an inch in a year so id say 2-3 years before they are too big for a 20

Not sure of the sexual maturity size.

Just wanted to throw at you that if you have a choice of 20 gallon tanks, go for a 20 long insted of a 20 high. The long gives you more surface area, and a larger footprint for them to setup teritories. Also with the larger footprint you can decorate more IMO. Easier to deco from side to side than top to bottom.

2-3" is possible maturatiy for convicts, or at least till you can really sex them.

In my experiences, i've never seen one 6". That doesn't mean they can't get there, but the biggest i've seen in person has been about 4".

Just look closely, you might start seeing some orange scales and might get lucky with a pair. The other option is to buy about 4 and get the pair and remove the other 2 before they are killed...

I had two pair in a tank and both the females had eggs. The dominant male was taking care of both them not letting the other male go near his own eggs. It was quit strange. So, feeling bad for him getting beat up all the time, I took him out and put him in another tank. The other male continued to try to breed and be a pair with both females. Being a female myself, I couldn't watch this any longer. So, I took the other female out and put it in the other tank with her first male and they had babies awhile back. My bossy two-timer male still hasn't been able to get his eggs to hatch and grow. The moral of this story.... I have no idea,,,,,just thought I would share....

I've got a breeding pair of convicts in a 10gal. I'd like if it was bigger, but it's all i've got and they seem comfortable. lots of fry kicking around...from around .5 inches to much smaller.

I do however caution you, i thought i would be able to mix a breeding pair of convicts with 2 kribs and green terror in a 30 gallon....but i was sadly mistaken, they're taking a beating right now and i feel bad.
