I think they are mean SOB's. Especially when spawning. I don't really find them any more interesting than any other cichlid I guess.

Discus, now there's a neat and unique cichlid.

convicts are awesome. i love how frequently they breed. i LOVE their hardiness. i think its pretty cool how they guard their fry. most convicts will bite your hand if you put it in the tank when they have fry. id say convicts are a little overprotective of their fry...but in the wild, i guess they have to be. i think convicts bore alot of people that breed more difficult cichlids like discus. alot of people like to challenge themselves.

I got my convict by accident from a mislabled tank and a combination of my ignorance and the ignorance of the fish store employee.

However my convict has turned me away from the drab boring world of community fish towards cichlids. No longer will I be forced to watch platys swim like aquatic morons back and forth bumping off the glass!

I've got a firemouth with my convict and he's kind of neat I give the firemouth a 6.5 because my convict seems to like him and I trust his judgement. The convict rates a 9/10 because he has taught me about the whole world of fishy opportunitie out there and he's great fun to watch. I am busily saving my money for a large cichlid setup which will feature my good buddy the convict.

Convicts are ok i guess, but they are not all that great. As C-Man said they are good first cichlid and easy to breed. But i think its how easily they breed that puts some people off. 6/10

I think my convicts are fantastic! Theyre such smart fish, so much more than my others in my community tank. I dont think its the challenge of getting them to breed, its actually keeping the fry alive, thats my challenge at least. 9 out of 10.

I had convicts for awhile but soon grew tired of them spawning every five minutes and forcing every tankmate I tried to retire in a corner on a rather large tank, 50 gallons. They were fun but only if I wanted to have convicts. I enjoy the rams more. They are calm and you can put them with other community fish and while they are not very aggresive they still have great character. I don't like it when people equvicate personality with aggression. Many calm fish can be very interesting and fun to watch. I would rate convicts at a 7.5 at the onset of purchasing them but a 5 after about 6 months of owning them.

Pluses, smallish, good colours, easy to breed , relatively interesting

Minuses, too aggressive, too many stupid manmade colours, too easy to breed so you don't learn much.

I'm going to give them a 4 , if only because I wish people had the imagination to try something else.

They come in:

Black - Most common form, grey with black stripes.
Pink - solid pinkish body
Albino - rare
Marbled or Calico - Pink with blotches of black/grey

Yeah wayne, i can see why you gave a 4. They are pretty common and it seems everyone trys them, there are so many more species that can be a first cichlid.
