hey,

Im so glad i found this place. You guys all seem to be extremely knowledgable in the fish fields. This place is a haven for all newcomers to build on their skills. I think its great!:) So as my first question i would like to know if a convict chiclid ( who i thnk only reaches 5 inches, correct me if im wrong) would be content and healthy in a 15 gallon tank. Would it need another convict to keep it company? Thanks ahead of time.

okay, what should i use to cycle my tank for these little fellas. and could you please fill me in on their diet and habitat preferences.

Are there any other fish that convicts get along well enough with that they can live in harmony in a 15g together?

Thanx

With a mating pair of convicts I would say you wouldn't be able to keep anything else with them in a 15g.

I have 7 zebra danios in a 29g with a single female convict. It gets a little tense when she lays eggs, but I haven't had a bad experience with the danios and the single female convict. Probably because the danios are so fast that the convict gets tired of chasing them around. I'm not sure how the danios would make out with a male though....

Idk....LOL My male was a sissy. My female did the dirty work :p

I fed mine general cichlid flakes. They will also take pellets, sticks, bloodworms....mostly anything :)

Fishless cycle (article on one of the first 2 sections of this forum)

Basically.....they like an aquarium with hiding places and places to spawn. So rocky, drftwood, plants......just make sure you got some cover in the tank.

Do females even grow to 5 inches?

Punisher, be prepared for many fry. My female has laid eggs twice now (with no male to fertilize) exactly 4 weeks apart. I'm expecting more eggs a month later. If I had a male, I think I would have 50-75 babies right now.

Well acctually i grew my pair out in a 15gal (29gal split in half....so almost 15 :p) and then moved them into the 10gal. They spawned in the 10gal many times with no problem. My female was about 4.5-5" Male a little larger.

Nah no sand needed. gravel worked for me.

To syphon sand just hover it over the sand and suck up the nasties. :D
