I just got back from a trip at oahu, and boy it was great...

I was walking a long the north shore, and there were tons of dead broken coral that was absolutely beautiful. My question is, is that if i boil this coral, will it still greatly affect the PH?

Is there something inside of it that will be released that kills my fish?

I have a 10 gallon with barbs and danios.

Its just it looks real decorative and nice, but i definitely don't want to harm my fish!

Thanks for the advice!

Should not be a real problem Ryan.
It willl slightly buffer the water which is actually not a bad thing.

I had a piece of purple coral in with my freshwater fish in a 55G tank for several years. The key is to do regular water changes. That way the conditions in the tank cannot get too extreme. The trick to keeping water conditions optimal is dilution. All bad things can be avoided by dilution. The problems starts when you allow something to get concentrated in a closed environment like your tank. Do regular water changes and your tank will do better than ever. Fish grow faster, plants grow better, water parameters stay normal, etc...

I hope I helped out. With regular changes you can pretty much put anything in the tank because anything that leaches out will be diluted to the point that it will not hurt the fish. The thing to be careful with is that something doesn't leach out too quickly and kill everything before you can dilute it, but the effects of coral is not immediate but rather slow.

Good luck and make sure to boil coral to kill any unwanted little bugs that can be found with wild collected things.
