Cories acting weirdly.

Hi,I've just found this site .I have 2 cories in a 20 gallon tank with some guppies.I got them just over a month ago and they've been fine.Last week one of them started actin weird. He wasn't spending any to=ime on the bottom of the tank,he was scooting around all over the place and chasing the guppies around. Then 2 days later he was dead, niow the other one's started doing the same thing..
Do you know what might be causing this and am I safe to get some more and put them in my tank?

cories acting weirdly

Hi Purple,I've got a test kit for the PH,I'll do that and see what gives. Thanks for the info.My Guppies are fine so I'm thinking it isn't an infection. Thanks for the info..
When i get some more for my tank I'll get 3 - 4 since this seems to be a good number for them.

I wouldn't add any more cories until you figure out what the problem is. If it is parasites, the new cories would get it too.

I would carefully treat the cory for internal parasites. Use half the dosage on the medication because cories are sensitive to medicines.

I had cories that did that it happened when I had a mini cycle after changing a filter on a 10 gallon. Cories seem to be sensitive to things like that. Mine went ballistic charging all over the place and then they dropped dead. When you say the ammonia is ideal what level is ideal exactly?

cories acting weirdly

My ammonia level is the lowest colour on the hart,I don't know what that is,it just says ideal water conditions. My PH is 8. ?.My chart only goes up to 7.4 and it's a darker blue than that.
If your cories did this when you changed the filter how did you get round that one cause you have to change it occasionaly?
Maybe they just don't like it when i rinse it out.

You do occasionally have to change the filter but this happened back when I was a bit new and the tank became "over clean" and resulted in an ammonia spike and then dead cories.

The rinsing could be your problem if you use tap water as it kills the good bacteria that you need in your filter. Rinse the filter out with the water from your tank just enough to get the crud off the filter to keep the water moving. Most filters only need replacing every few months once I learned this concept I had far fewer fish deaths and saved a ton of money on filters.

Ok - a Ph of 8+ is a bit high for corries - 7.5 or lower would be better - what's the Ph of your tap water ?

And while we're here - are you sure they're getting enough food - they prefer to graze it from the bottom rather than catch it as it falls.......this could explain some of the aggresion

cories acting weirdly

My tap wate's alkaline as I'm on well water here not mains and yes I'm sure they're getting enough food.my corie that's left is still with me and behaving a bit normal. He's going down the bottom sometime but a lot of the time he's still going allover the place. He used to be very quiet,he was always the lazier one of the two but he's not anymore.I thought since there's only 1 of him now he's meant to go even quieter.Obviously someone didn't tel him there's only him left I guess.
