I have had three bronze cories for a few months now, and 2 weeks ago added a fourth one. Our goal is to get the right number of each kind of fish so they can have babies. We have two females and a male, and i'm not sure what the fourth one is.

At the pet store two weeks ago, I tried to find another male so that the chances of eggs getting fertilized were higher. However, since this new fish is still small I can't tell if it's a male or female. I thought I saw the new one chasing around the male, like they were "courting", so i'm asuming it's a female, but it's still skinny like a male would be.

Tomorrow is the last day I have to return a cory and get a new one (2 week warranty). I was thinking about returning the new one, but since I dont know what gender it is, i'm thinking about returning one of my original females and trying for another male. She's perfectly healthy.

What do you guys think? Any better ideas? It's tough to tell what gender they are when they aren't well-fed and still small. Are there any other ways to tell?

Well, it's typically better to have more males than females when trying to breed cories. So returning the female isn't a bad idea. :)

About telling if they're female or male...
The only things I've noticed are that the female is rounder and bigger and lighter colored than the male. I've also discovered that the fins under their body are different. The female uses hers as her egg pouch. They are rounder and lighter colored. The male's are more pointed and have black coloring in them. You can't really see both from this pic, but you can definitely compare the female with your new one. Both my babies still have some black in them, although the older one is looking more and more like the mom.

Like you are finding out it is going to be next to impossible to find the sex you want at a LFS. most cories sold are just too young to be able to tell the difference. You will have better luck at getting a particular sex if you contact a breeder.

Frank Falcon aka Coryologist is probably one of the best cory breeders around. You can find a list of what he is working with here Coryologist - Specie List And he sells on aquabid.com and on his personal auction website 1hrauctions.com - Home of the Saturday Nite Special One Hour Auctions!!!
