How much should I expect to pay to start a 10G Nano?

I'm figuring somewhere in the 3-500 range but if you guys think of anything that would push it either way let me know. There is an electrical/light company next to my work so I'm hoping I can get some kind of MH fixture for a decent price.

So far I've got the tank and stand. So that leaves...lights, powerheads, LR, substrate, protein skimmer...and probably some other things I'm not thinking of.

well here is the deal....evaporation on a 10 gallon with a MH would be crazy, and you would burn all of your corals, unless it was placed extremely high above the tank or it was like a 75W bulb....you might be better of with a 96 watt PC fixture....this is assuming you want more than basic soft corals....you will need LR, substrate, test kits, and powerheads....no real need for a skimmer, stock lightly and do large water changes....you will be much better off, I think you shot extremely high, unless you are going to buy some really nice/expensive corals....at most the LR should cost you 75-100$ for 10-15lbs.... and that is your most expensive purchase, except maybe the light...I know S.reef and Lordroad have a 96 watt fixture...ask them what they paid for it. for 3-500$ you could have a very cool, extremely interesting tank...welcome to SW.

I just ordered the 96 watt fixture from www.hellolights.com and it was $87.00

Just to give you an idea, so far I've spent:
$8 on a 10 lb bag of crushed coral sand
$40 for 2 powerheads
$103 total for light (because I ordered the extension legs too - this includes tax)
$65 in live rock
$10 or so in R/O water

I already had the tank, heater and the HOB. I also already had Instant Ocean and a Hydrometer because I have 2 brackish tanks. That's all I can think of right now.

My tank has been set up for a week today.

Welcome!

Edit: Add $12.99 for the Joe's Juice, I just had to order...GRRRRRR

With all the supllies, fish, live rock, ect., I'd say somewhere between 100 and 200 dollars. But thats just over time. Thats why I'm saving up!*SUPERSMIL But its worth it!

I believe that $250-300 is accurate. My nano is doing well with an 80w PC ($100 for current satelite). Aresgod is right on with the LR/light being the biggest purchases. I'm still in the early stages as well, just read the pages these guys know there stuff. Overall it's not as expensive as people think, well at 10 gallons at least.

I've put more than 500$ into my ten gallon reef, but I've had it up and running for nearly a year. I didn't scrimp on lighting or rock and I've added a lot of canned pods over the months, DT phyto, salt mix, R/O water store-bought, nickel and dime stuff... also corals, critters, clams... lot of ins, lot of outs, lot of what-have you's.

my lfs is very overpriced so I looked into the online shops. I have had very good luck from marinedepot.com and drsfostersmith.com. I still support the locals each week but big $ purchases can't be matched by the online sites. To each their own I guess.

Thanks for the help guys...

I've talked with the lighting people next door and they say they can get me anything I want. If I can get a good price (half of say a 20" 96 watt PC) then I'll go with those guys and create a custom hood.

It will definitely be on the "things to do" list for this summer.

My 15g Nano which you can check out in the SW General section under
"SALTY WATERS 15g Nano thread...finally!"
or click on this URL address
http://www.myfishtank.net/forum/showthread.php?t=35090
has cost me over $1500.00 CND so it all depends on how far you want to take it!

That is not including the cost of upkeeping it like Water, Salt mix, test kits or anything like that. The price I stated is just for what you see listed on the spec page of the thread
