Do female fish cycle like most other creatures or are they always available and ready even if they are very pregnant? I have a very pg platy and molly. I thought I only had one male molly, but today I found out the other platy is obviously a male. The molly is hot after the pg molly as is the male platy after the pg platy. I am assuming they are trying to breed because both their gonopodiums are very obvious. Do they continue to breed even when they are heavy with fry? Also is there some ritualistic thing they do? Both males keep pushing with their nose where I am sure their gonopodium is suppose to go and I actually wondered if they were just trying to eat the fry as they were born. Although I have spent a lot of time just watching, I have not seen them get into any position where penetration could occur. I am assuming they would have to be belly to belly and tail to nose. I would have put this in the breeding forum, but it doesn't seem to get much activity.

Livebearers are fertile myrtles. They can be or get preggers all the time, and with multiple 'spawns'. When males mate with the females, they will actually get almost side to side, and their gonopodium swings sideways to deposit the sperm. I've seen it happen - it's cute, in a disturbing way.

And livebearers can store sperm, so even if they are 'heavily pregnant,' they can still be mated with and can store the sperm for the next batch of fry.

Best to have 2 or 3 females for every male, so that no one girl fish is harrassed too much by the boys.
