The density of the coral. If it's little pieces of coral they cant be as tight as the sand.

Oh yeah, and i went to 3 different stores, and 2 of them had only the black sand...wich i don't really want. The only think they had was crushed coral. At one place, the guy tols me to put 3.5 inches of coral minimum and i didn't really trusted him...cause well..he works there

I already spent 1700 $ ( CAD ) on my system and i the guy told me my full setup without inhabitans should cost me 3500 $ min even tough he doesn't know what hardware i have...so again..can't trust the guy.

So i'm asking the pro here

lol...well there are really two schools of thought is the thing...some people believe in the Deep Sand Bed (3-4in) and some do not...those who do not usually go for about an inch...as far as i know, there is as of now no definitive answer to which is "better"

Well, you can definatly get going for less then 1700. As for substrate...i find it really doesnt matter the depth. Put as much as you feel looks good.
