crushed coral good substrate for sump?

Some crushed coral on top of the sand would be good imo. Give spaces for all the little amphipods and bristle worms to hide and breed.

When i had sand i did not see any pods breeding in it or moving around in it. When i had crushed coral the pods would move through out the whole substrate. This is just from personal expirience though.

yes, exactly it has more denitrifying capacity than cc does. What I would do is put sand in and place some of the crushed coral into a mesh bag and lay this over the sand for a couple weeks and it will seed out into the sand.

The reason you didn't see them wasn't because they didn't exist, it is just that it is harder to see them in the sand....believe me they are there.
