Cutting glass is tricky and since it is already glued together might be very difficult at the corners. See what a professional glass cutter says. But when glass is cut it is normally placed flat on a firm surface. I would cut the stand before the aquarium.

thats just it, its not going on a stand, i have a wet bar i dont use,
and it has overhead cabinets, i want to get a 30 gal long, but since i got this tank for free,,, i will definatly let a glass company do the cutting, i might just take it by there and let them take a look

Its entirely possible that they'll be able to take it apart and cut it and put it back together...but it might not be worth the pretty penny they want to do it. I agree, take it to an expert and see what they think.

If your going to spend the money, buy a new tank. Isn't 2 tanks better than 1? Then you would have the free 55 and a new 30 for your little spot. Whats the sense in paying enough money to modify an old tank when you can buy a new one for roughly the same price (I'm guessing). Besides, 30 gal longs are cheap, especially glass. I would go check out what glass cutters want to charge for the job but the way I see it, it doesn't make any sense. Why risk one tank, paying lots of money to customize it, when you can buy another brand new?
