I need help.  I have been reading up on Cycle less tank.  I.E. using no fish and instead using ammonia to start the tank.

I need help, from what I have read you need to use like 99% pure ammonia.  Most pet stores after I ask and explain what I am doing, they look at me like a dog look at a high pitch tone.  They don't have a clue.  One big named pet store, the guy said to pee in a cup and dump it in, since its mostly ammonia.

I have gone to stores and most ammonia have additives, or a number of these bottles, do not even list the contents.  So I do not know if the ammonia has addetives.  I live in Dallas, TX and should not have this much problem.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreaciated.  If not I guess I will use fish to cycle the tank, but wanted to not then have to get rid of the fish.

Thanks.   :p

The process is called fishless cycle, and it's a great way to save your fish from the stress of the cycle.

No, you don't need 99% pure ammonia, you just need ammonia that's free from any surfactants, or any other additives that would harm your fish.

I hope you'll allow me the luxury of being very lazy and just refering you to the article on fishless in the articles section of this site.

The ammonia I bought was from the local food store, No-name brand in fact. All it said was Pure Ammonia but didnt said the % of ammonia. It worked fine. I wouldnt worry about it to much. When the cycling is done, you will be doing a large water change anyways therefore removing/diluting any possible harmful substances.

I know the feeling about asking the lfs about fishless cycling. You have to remember that most of the lfs are from an older generation. In fact one owner asked me how I know about fishless cycling since 99% dont know about it.
