Cycling and Temperature

Greetings All- I thought I had posted this question a little while ago but it did not show up on the fourm.

I have a 50g brand new tank that just started cycling. Will increasing the temperature of the tank (say 86 degs) positively effect the cycling speed? I have live sand and live rock in the tank.

Some people recommend doing it, but I don't think it is a good idea. May lead to die off of the beneficial bacteria when you dial it down at the end. Besides, all it can do is speed up the cycle, which is not something you should be trying to do. Take it slow and easy and you will have less problems in the long run.

I agree there is no benefit of speeding things up, let nature take its course and you will benefit in the long run.

You can speed things up with the temp, but don't do it.... Learn to be patient with this hobby and it will show.

While it's common in freshwater, in saltwater, it's better to let nature take its own sweet time to cycle. In general, saltwater organisms are a lot more sensitive to temperature swings than freshwater ones. The ocean, being huge, has a much more stable temperature.

How does one know when they cycling process is complete....im a newbie too

When ammonia and nitrites have dropped to zero, the cycle is finished.
