I am going to be setting up a brackish tank for a single f8 puffer I got a new tank new filter here's what I'm wondering.
If I hook the new filter up to an existing FW tank to get it cycling is it going to kill my benni colonies when hook it up to a brackish set up?

Stetting up a new brackish tank with established (non-brackish) bio media should be fine. Keep in mind the biological media in a filter only houses a portion of your beneficial bacteria. It's said that the vast majority lives in/on the tank's hardscape.

Regardless, a small tank with a single puffer shouldn't be an issue. You'll just need to monitor water parameters a few times a week to get a handle on it.

Sudden changes in the salt level will kill your beneficial bacteria that are acclimated to freshwater.

Do you already have the brackish tank and fish? If not, you could seed your filter by using your FW tank, then slowly add salt to bring the the brackish tank up to where you want to keep it.

I think I will have to slowly add salt any ways cause if I'm not mistaken the LFS that has the F8 keeps them in FW. If they are in brackish it's no big deal, I can seed the filter let it run and still slowly add salt. Once I'm at a desired salinity then I will go pick up the fish.
