Damn ICK...

#1
I got ick... In my tank... My main tank, my favorite tank, my Affrican Cichlids tank...

3 fish are affected, 1 died already.

It is the second time I get a fish disease, and both times were related to the same fish store. At first I tought it was bad luck, but now it's kind of hard not to accuse him...

I am starting to hate this place... Because of other things also... anyway, he has the nicest fishes in the area... :(

Okay, enough complaining. Here is how I am treating it. First I raised the water temp to 85 - 86 degrees. Yeah I know it's high... But I read it helps alot to speed up bacteria evolution and thus speeds the killing.

I added salt also. I added 3 teaspoons per 5 gallons of water. Since it is a 75G I added 45 teaspoons. That's a lot of salt... I didn't add it all at the same time, I added it at a rate of about 7 to 8 teaspoons from time to time during 24h.

I hope this will cure the evil Ick. From now on I WILL ALWAYS quarantine EVERY FISH and PLANT before putting it in my tank... I know I should've done that before, but the lesson will be learned I guess...

I'll tell you how it's been

Now what should I do ?

The three fishes I had affedted by ICK are dead now... :(

What should I do? Continue the treatment and consider this day as the first day after any visible sign of ick can be detected? Meaning I should keep water temperature higher and the water salty for 3 more days? maybe 4?

Should I add something to the water then, to like strenghten my fishes or their slime coat? Something like Stress Coat or anything?

thanks again

Trouthead, I read that article from beginning to end, several times... And that is why I didn't buy Biorum's Quickcure... I saw it at the fishstore, but didn't buy it... I got some damn expensive Seachem Para-Guard.

Biorum, did you use Quickcure? Did it work for you? Is it why you say it's the best? Or did you read it somewhere?

I so hope my fish will make it trough the treatment... I was sure the salt would kill the ick, but yesterday when I saw 4 more fish had it, I decided to go with the meds.

While you're trying to cure ich, you should look into why they got it in the first place. You said your LFS has a problem with ich, so that should be an indication of quarantine. But let's say that you're not sure where the ich came from. What to do then?

Ich takes over when the fish's immune system is lowered enough that it can't fight repel ich. Some sources of stress that lower's a fish's immune system are new tankmates, temperature swings, the introduction of chemicals to a tank that alters some aspect of the water/enviornment, outside activity such as a tank being located in a noisy/active enviornment, fighting, territory encroachment, etc.

Try to keep things as happy as can be for the fish. This may not be to your liking, but it's not a choice you should have the leisure to make.

Sometimes you just can't help but getting ich. You should assume that all fish carry ich (and most do). Ich can be alive and well without showing syptoms. The best thing to do is to take care of your fish and hopefully the ich will die out on its own, being that it cannot find a succeptible host.

You should aggressively treat ich, and as quickly as possible. Meds will be the fastest way, but you should be sure that the med you use is not only effective, but will not harm your other fish or envionrment.
