Defunct thermometer or heater?

Well my Penn Plax stick on thermometer that just sticks to the outside of the tank says the temperature is about 84, however my heater with a thermostat is on and it's only set for about 76/77. I know the light can add maybe 2-3 degrees but not THAT much and it's only been on for about 3hrs. The heater is a Marineland Visi-Therm 25 watt. I'd rather trust in Marineland's quality than Penn Plax's. Oh well for now I'm gonna go buy a new thermometer, the one with mercury in it that you put on the inside of the thank, I've seen alot of serious hobbyists use those though I've seen them use the ones I have too. I dunno, worth a try, maybe a defunct thermometer.

What do you guys think? How would I go about returning the heater if I determine it's that? Should I go back to the local fish store or go through Marineland?

I suspect it's the heater. Take it back to the store, they should be able to exchange it for you. You might want to call first to check, but it should be their responsibility to replace it (assuming you bought it there).

With the stick on thermometers, if the room is really hot or cold (in comparison to the tank) it can give an off reading, but generally they won't give a completely false reading.
