???
I would like to set up a freshwater tank with a silver sand substrate. What depth would people recommend? I have an eheim external filter, but its been suggested that I use an internal as well to keep the water moving, is this true? Any comments?

i'd go with ~2" maybe 2.5" sand is pretty easy to keep. no need to use a internal filter. if you need the water to be moving - use a powerhead and stay with the eheim - they're excellent filters. internal filters are also ugly as heck. what kind of fish do you want and how big is the tank?

I've always wanted to try sand as well.  But I figure you'd have to use maybe 1/2 sand 1/2 gravel to hold anything firmly (plants and stuff)  It would probably depend on the type of fish as well as to if they pull things up easily or not (goldfish probably a no especially larger fancy goldfish)

You know...try to simulate real stream type stuff of sand/dirt/rock/gravel mixture.

Sterilized dirt of course... once it settled (probably take a few days) you'd have to worry about hardness shifts and other things leaching out of it so you'd have to be sure of a clean source...

dunno... Anyone every try that?
