The guy who sold me my kribs said they were probably purple but may be scarlet kribs. Before scarlets get larger than purple kribs, how can you tell them apart?

My kribs have a turquoise patch on the sides of their faces, leading me to think they may be scarlets, but apparently the males of this kind of fish are supposed to display red colors as the females do. My male is pale grey. Will his color come out as he matures? If so, why has the female's color come out already and not his?

No idea what that means. Scarlet and purple kribs? A krib is a krib, there may be some variation in color among different LFS and such but there really isn't a defined Scarlet or Purple Krib.

Males generally do not show off unless breeding. But color should come as they both age.

They look like my pair. My male is roughly 3 - 3 1/2 " When I got him he was about an inch. He went thru a growth spurt, but here lately has stopped growing. From everything I have read, the males only get up to 4 inches, so I am not sure where the 6 inches come from.. Either way, like CichlidMan said a krib is a krib.

*****Ok I stand corrected. Males can get up to 5 inches.....

I've never heard this either. The closest thing I can come up with in my head is if the dude was thinking of maybe another Pelvachromis species other than pulcher. I've seen other Pelvachromis that so have a similar shape, size and markings as the standard pulcher, but there were subtle differences.

hehe, see why common names can create such havoc :)
