I bought the fish tank, AquaCulture Deluxe 29 from WalMart, and the hood is extremely flawed. The full hood lid, which you open easily, is not completely closed off in the back of the lid. The water moisture seeps up thru the long and thin opening into the light fixture, therefore causing the 24 inch light stick to flickers and dims when turned on. Usually, I have to wait for it to finally light up completely, but this time, its still dim after a few hours. I'm fed up with this and wanting to know what other hoods should I get that will fit perfectly?

I would try and take it back. The light normally flickersand dims when it turns on, but it shouldn't stay dim you'll want a new light and if the hood gets water to the light i dont see how it could do that but ya just go to a pet store with fish supplies and they'll help you.

Yeah, I am not going to return the entire tank. I am just going to buy another hood and light fixure, along with a different light.

Are you sure that it's not just the light having problems? Have you tried putting in another light to see if it still flickers? I might be the moisture, but it sounds to me like a regular light/ballast problem.

I have no money until Thursday, thats when I get paid at WalMart. I sure hope that PetsMart have the hood... They moved across the highway into a smaller rental space, which I think was very stupid of them to do that, because it results in less and limited supplies. It was the first time ever that I see a PetsMart store having dividers in all of the tanks. You can get the idea how much smaller it is now. I cant wait for another to be built nearer me. The WalMart I work at, I never see a complete hood/fixture for 29G tanks in stock!

PetSmart and other LFS should carry an all glass hood that will fit. I wouldn't buy another light just yet. The one that comes with those lids should be able to be removed. You can just set it on top of the glass top. Replace the light if it still gives you problems.

I agree that this sounds more like a ballast issue, but moisture could very well be the culprit.

Now may also be a good time to look into upgrading your lighting for plants.

I looked online and PetSmart dosn't have the glass tops listed with the rest of the hoods, but I know they carry them. Here is a link to Docs Foster n Smith so you can get an idea of what size you will need.

If you do want to upgrade your lighting, this is also a very nice affordable light. Compact Fluorescent Aquarium Lighting: Coralife Aqualight Quad Tube Compact Fluorescent Strip Lights

No you don't want that. The Kelvin on that light is meant for salt water and is out of range of what plants want. Not to mention MH lights are VERY powerful. I do know they can be used on planted tanks, but you will need to have a jungle in the tank or risk algae exploding in your tank from too much light.

Look for lights in the 6000-6500K range. The link I gave you has 2 versions of that light and one of them is within the right range for plants.
