Hey,
was just wondering with the mixture for co2 (sugar, water, yeast) does it matter whether you use Raw sugar or White sugar? is one more effective than the other?
Thanks

havent noticed a difference. it does last longer if you add a bit of baking soda.
My DIY reactor on my 10 gal has been running for about 2 months now 0_0

ok, i am feeling bad about my tank as I am not able to go to shop at all for co2 liquid, tried calling once but they were out of stock .

I want to do this too, diy co2, any perfect guide out there, where i can quickly assemble and add this stuff to my tank? any tips for me?

Edit: In mean time, i am doing regular water changes (even if water is crystal clear) so tank-plants are not totally devoid of any co2.

anshuman is there many pet shops or aquariums in mumbai? When I lived in Delhi I don't think I ever saw anything like a pet shop, I adopted a street puppy that wandered into the block I lived in. He was only bout 4-5weeks old, I had real trouble just finding a animal hospital to have him vaccinated, wormed etc
All the locals thought I was nuts adopting a street dog pup and the fact I payed to take care of it. You probably think its nuts too, considering you would know what the street dogs are like, however he was young, plump, no skin problems but all alone so I thought I'd give him a shot at life.

yea, I am sure quality petshops are hard to find in delhi or any other metro place around India but mumbai is simply in its own league. Here ppl are really enthusiastic plus people pay huge bucks for stuff in Mumbai.

fish tanks mumbai - Google Maps

I am sure there are more than 200-300 places scattered around city.

I went to one shop last week called nautilus aqua and it looked like aquarium factory (i will take snap next time, hope they dont mind). He said i will get quality fertilizers, substrates, liquid almost all imported and also locallly made , by next month. he gave me pamplet of more than 200 tank-plants and told, I can order on monday and pick on thursday (normal all around mumbai).

I live in dombivli which is kinda just away from mumbai but traveling right into mumbai takes me 15-25 mins.

Edit: the local street dogs which have no fur and look skinny are actually perfect dogs for climate we have here and they are very clever with good personalities, if you go in farm places (my uncle has wine-yards) you will find the farmers prefer to keep lots of this dogs on farm as guard-dogs and pet-dogs. people in cities are spoiled by hollywood and tv which makes them prefer furry dogs and imported dogs, they live depressed in high-rises, cooking in temp. (as they should be in ultra-cold climate or snow-regions) as show dogs.

Because you were from outside, you saw the local novelty of that street dog and thought of giving some attn. :) lucky him.

I always wanted to get down to mumbai when I lived in India, just never happened. I had it described to me like this - Delhi is old India, Mumbai is new India. I did of course go to Agre to see the Taj Mahal. Wow!

It wasn't so much of a novilty factor with the puppy, more that I'm not use to seeing dogs (non-pets) the way they live in India, I felt sorry for him, I was a sucker for the same reason when it came to beggars. I understood the reasons why etc but I couldn't help but...well help i guess. My driver Lal told me he had an exact same colour dog at his home in his village. He said they are known simply as 'Indian dog' and make great pets when raised from pups, and they have VERY strong immune systems. Real hearty.
Anyways enough bout my time in India, this is a fish forum after all lol :p
Thanks anshuman

no problemo :).

back to this.

I just visited Plantedtank.net and OMGGGGG. this DIY Co2 thing can be as simple as sticking a tube in bottle and mixing thigs to extremely complex & elaborate plans to gas up fishtank perfectly and make natural pearling of grass/leaves (which will easily happen in nature ) right in fishtank.

I guess i will read all options before i finalize. I also read DIYCo2 with bottle+sugar+yeast is not recommended for tanks above 20gallons as its hard to give proper co2 all around tank. If this is true , someone please comment and advice , as i have ~25 gallon of water in my 30G.

yesss... that.

See this powerhead is consuming room air and pushing the water at that rate etc. so i now read i can actually plugin DIYco2 pipe, i am not sure how this will go, but it will be great, the boyu powerhead has a pipe i have to keep hanging, and that pipe is making noise while its sucking in air, i have no idea why is that making noise, rest of the tank is quite quiet.

lets see. i really liked that idea of adding DIYco2 to powerhead, striking two birds with one powerhead :p

man ,its extremely confusing, no one post any pic or video, this is 2009 now. :(

I still didn't get what should be mixture proportions in 2litre bottle for 30G ( i still didn't try to find out for proportions but didnt come across single post giving proportions ).

Also still no idea how exactly should i fix the pipe from co2 to powerhead, with separate spilt-y-valve or simply right into powerhead pipe etc. trying to go to youtube. would like someone here who has done it already to comment etc.

you know that air line thats connected to your boyu? the one that is a little bit noisey? Disconnect that and connect the DIY co2 line to it. Thats it.
As for a correct mixture, I'm not 100% sure but for now just follow the instructions in the first thread that had the pics of how to make the bottle with airline etc. That mixture will produce co2 from my experience.

My formula for DIY CO2: 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, 1/4 teaspoon yeast, 1 cup sugar, warm water to fill 2litre bottle 3/4 full. Has worked on 29 gallon tanks just fine. I've also used 1/2 of the above in a 1litre bottle for 15 and 20gallon tanks.

and how much time does this last till you have to change the mixture?
It has run from 4 to 5 weeks. When I see it slowing down on the bubbles, I change it out.

When I added CO2 to the 29gallon, I found it better to do two seperate 1litre bottles for me, I just changed every other one every 2 weeks. It seemed to keep the CO2 amount in the tank stable with one going strong and one slowing down.

That tank is now a soil-based tank, so don't use CO2 in it anymore.
