This is my first tank with saltwater, and I didn't want to spend a lot on lighting, so I made my own. This was relatively cheap, the only expensive thing was the light bulbs. It took about a week to construct (on and off).
4 x 10w 50/50 mini compact fluorescent
I made reflectors out of aluminum sheet metal, which worked out VERY nicely, as I could bend it to form around the bulb itself. I used a 12" x 24" sheet, which cost me only $3.50.
Total cost = $48
