Does anyone have anything they can tell me about a fish called the Red Devil. I have a 29 gallon tank with an hob filter made by regents. Aquatech 20-40 size cartridges fit in it and it seems to be doing fine. Large stones.

Anyway back to the problem. I put four fish in there. Two firemouths because after two tries the third firemouth died and also two mainly yellowish fish with black blotches on the middle of their body. At the pet store they were identified as red devils and I was told they would coexist with the firemouth in the 29 gallon tank for the rest of their happy little lives. I get home online, type in red devil and come up with hardly anything relevant. One page says they grow to 12 inches and are terrors with one needing a 29 gallon tank. The scientific name seems to be either
Amphilophus citrinellum or Amphilophus labiatum. They seem to be orangey red with some white in pictures ive seen. Do they actuallyu change from this yellowish color. Both seem like trouble. Is this true? What did I get myself into? PLEASE ENLIGHTEN ME

Also, all the fish seem very skittish and even with hiding places for them they still refuse to show their faces when I approach the tank. I do have rocks and holes for them to be in. They have been in there a while without any new additions or other posisible signs of trauma. Is this natural or can I fix it.

That tank is big enough for a pair of firemouths with no other cichlids. There are a couple of species of cichlids sold as red devils, but they are all large and at least aggressive thro to very, very aggressive.

Wow ok those are gone the first opportunity I have. I guess ill stick with the two firemouths. Know how big those get? Right now a 29 seems to big for the two of those things. I barely see them some days. That and they dont seem to thrilled to be in there.
