Hello all, a year a go my uncle gave me a light set up he got from some where, I dont know where. I pulled it out today and was looking at it. Its one huge bulb and a overly large ballast, all wired together. I want to know if it could be used as a plant light over a planted tank. With the change of the bulb possibly. I pulled all the info off of it that I could. Heres the info I have on it.

Advance
dual watt HID Ballast
Catalog # 72C3584-N-P
for 1-250 watt bulb H37 Mercury Lamp

What does all that mean, be sides a really bright light. When I plug it in with the light that is there, after 3 minutes you can not look at the light at all. Its to bright. It will light up a whole room and not leave a shadow any where in the room. It looks like a regular incadencent light bulb but 3 times bigger.
Thank You
Shane

Good score !!

It is a single ended Metal Halide I suspect, but I need to check out what the ballast is for, it could possibly be a sodium high output.

I will need to check this out. However it is all good news for you. MH lights have awsome output, and that is what I suspect you have. You might need to go to a plant friendly spectrum - most bulbs are a bit blue and marine tank friendly. Also you need to get a reflector, and bear in mind these things get hot and need to be looked after carefully tp stop overheating problems.

I would tend to think it a good idea to email advance ballasts and ensure it is a metal halide . Also google the web yourslf , specifyingthe part id to see what you can find out from, example www.hellolights.com.
