First thing is to remove the driftwood and give it another good cleaning...I put mine in the shower and used scolding hot water to clean it after it had been sitting in the tank for a few months. It stopped releasing the coloring after that.
My ehiem filter cleared up the brown color within 6 hours.
i meant the vortex diatom filter. sorry i didn't specify. i have put some mopani wood in a new tank and it ruined it. the wood has spent over 4 years in two different tanks before and i can't believe it still stains the water. i have tried to filter it out with carbon (12 hours) then i tried a a hot magnum with one of those micron inserts (no effect after 9 hours) during all of this i have also been running the filter intended for the tank. a marineland c-360 with the factory media. the tank is 55 gal. i guess it will have to toss the wood or do a ton of water changing. there are no fish in the tank so at least i don't have that problem. thanks guys.
I just do water changes to keep the tannin down. Do you have any cat fish chewing on it? I have a bristlenose cat and she spents most of her time on my chunk of drift wood. Maybe that helps.

I think it would be worth a try but you would have to take the diatom filter apart and clean it really good afterwards if it does work.
I know they suck up diatoms and make my water really clear so I'm not sure if it would definately work for tannins.
