dropsy in guppies??

#1
I have had these guys for three weeks now and his brother marik died of no unknown cause, then my others started dieing and still to be unknown, there doing alot better in their new ten gald and I have a hunch that the betta that was in the aquarium before them in the 3 gal was in fact a betta with TB cause of so many unexpected and unknonw deths, but I aint about to deal that out cause its a totaly different call.

But now in my ten gal all the babies are doing great, my biger female is about to spawn again =3 My little nami is a mature female in only a few more weeks, and what about floud?....

He's got Dropsy X_X!!!! He is reacting the same way a betta would when they get it, getting a little blouted and before I knew it the blout whent away to reveal raised scales. He's been staying at the top of the aquarium and though he eats okay and swims okay, he never goes to the bottome of the tank with my females and isint even showing interest in the now mature breedable female I named Nami. Floud should be raving over her like he did when Picori matured and he doesint really care o_O And with dropsy who would.

Though I'm still questioning the fact that he has it, with raised scales just starting to become advanced, and a loss in hornyness. Only one breeder I know of thinks they can get it.

So in a way I wonder if bettas and Guppies and Tetras all can get dropsy. And also makes me more fond of the three cause they could very well be related in the Lb genus.

Just thought I would post this to see if you guys have any insite, or to help those of you with the same case.. If it is dropsy I know what to do before he becomes a miserable fishie. Clove oil and Vodka can put him to sleep nice and calmly for Dropsy can not be stoped. It's a kind of disorder that happends to any surviving runts in a spawning, and in this case makes me ever more impashent to stop such horror by alowing nature to take it's place in a 35 gal tank and not alow such runts to survive to even show signs of dropsy >< I will be puting him to sleep the moment I get my mom to buy a small amount of clove oil and my sister has some cooolers that work just like vodka from what I have been told. The method I'm using it to put him in the 2gal again and let him get comfy for a day or so, then dim the lights for a few hours to see if he goes to sleep on his own, then to get him into a deeper sleep I will add a little clove oil into the water and watch for movement, then after a few minutes I will end his worries by puting in a equal amount of vadka: alchole. And That will have him die painlessly in his sleep.

Cause once a guppy is put to sleep by clove oil, it's a DEEP sleep and if you dont treat it with vodka shortly, they could wake up from it and the vadka burns so he will die in pure pain oO;. So when you do the clove oil it puts them in a deep sleep, enough for 8 or so miunutes. And in that time you wait till your sure their alseep and then put the vodka in and it will slow his body so he's in a coma, then stop his heart moments laiter for a peacful deth.

So without futher wait, I will like to say a final word for him but that will be in the other area of the forum, this is the final picture I took of him before the dropsy started showing. And this is how I would like to remember him.

All fish can get dropsy, however it is more common with some species than others -- like Goldfish, for instance. In species not particularly prone to the disease it is directly a result of poor water quality. Very few species can succefully recover from the disease -- recovery in small fish is very rare.

Good luck...

Thanks you guys, and yeah, Dropsy is never really abil to be healed=/ bettas are peged for the chopping block the moment they show signs, and laitly there is only 6 fish on record that recovered from dropsy, and though poeple say that dropsy is mainly from a filthy tank and horible care, it is also in the fishes genus. The immunity to such a desease even happends to the very best of breeders like bettatalks owner, and it is cause the genus of the fish is very valnerable to dropsy so even if your tank is sparkling if one drop of a special bacteria hits them even for a minute, thats about all it tanks.

Turns out I gave him one more day to check what other things could be put under the case of Floud, He did not have dropsy from how he is reacting for when a fish gets dropsy they can not easily swim in the bottom of the tank, while floud, my snakskin guppy, actualy loves the bottom of the tank, so we are going into further looks on what could be the matter, and if it has to do with the overcrowding from his ealier tank of a 1gal. =/ I feel like crap for doing what I did, but the pet store I got him f rom said that they wont have the color for awhile, so I had no choice to pick them and I ended up overcrowding my tank for a four day period while I got the ten gal, filtered, got more plants, and let the heater aclamait. I wont do that again thats for sure, however being that this is the first time I have ever owned guppies under my own care. I knew something was going to happen and now that I know he doesint have dropsy it's only the question of whats on his scales that mimic them and make him look thicker in size? I have a hunch it's velvet, so tomorrow I'm going to get meds and He and the tank will get clean. Cause he and his family where iching in the tank way before these signs on him persisted, and before the fry shows signs, I'm going to stop it.

I'm glad I waited ^^ He would have died from a mis deignoses, but I wasing quite ready anyway o_o so I possably would have waited cause my other tank is going to soon be holding some New guppy pairs from my aunt tina to replenish my losses, there will also be delta blues in the line and I'm looking for ribbon Lu2's. That will be on friday morning.

I'll Give more updates as time goes on, but for now it sounds like this:

Iching on hard or textured areas, acting lathargic, abnormal eating,White halo causing the Mimic of lifted semi pouched scales and hovering around the heater .

In this I have chosen these actions:

Raise heat up to 82-84 F.

Dim the light from 16 hours on and 8 off to 4 hours on and 20hours off.

Addition of 25% aquarium salt followed a hour laiter by a 50% water change.

Laiter tomorrow I will repeat in the morning.

Then with eddition to the whole tank for the deration of the fungus, I will add a healthy amount of Copperdscafe Removing my Carbon filter for 8 hours.

Then a 25% water change and a less amount of Copoperscafe every day

As the fungus detaches from my fish, I will remove the entire gravil bed and boil all plants.

continue decreasing the Copperscafe till ten days pass.

After the tenth day I will replace the gravil after a boil, and reanchore all plantings and ornaments.

After this I willl add Natural safe salt as my base and continue watching my new pairs of guppies over the next four days.

Progressivly on day 13 I will see the actions of my 7 fish and fry, and if everything holds up okay On the end of day 13 nearing day 14 I will place the new pairs in a davided net, then alow aclimation and introduction.

Then make a clean break for the both sides ( one pair and 8 fry that I have now) and ( On coming 2 pairs 2 extra males) from my aunt tina and the tank will be compleat, I will also in the week laiter Use my two gallon for a Female betta that I have cought veiw of at the locale fish basic shop called Carols Reef. =D Hopfuly with luck on my side I will be victor and my new tank will be compleat till the hope of a 35 gal draws near, I'm also hunching on my sister to check out the ten gals for a little nibble =3333 Ya never know I may come acrossed the cheep treasure XD a incompleated ten gal starter kit at petsmart! JACKPOT! x3
