I noticed awhile back that my upside down cat "Gus" has become what I call bloated. His stomach area looks as if there is a quarter sized mass in there. I thought maybe he was a she and pregnant, but he/she has no tank mate to breed with. Also arent cats not live bearers? Anyhow. After an hour or so at the library I determined he has dropsy. Now the book I read said there was not a treatment for him and that the fish will just die. Is this true??? Also the book said it was not contagious. Does anyone know if this is true? I'm searching on the net right now also, I just wanted to ask for anyones help who may have experience in this. Thanks alot guys.

Dropsey is aweird disease... while there is technically no cure for it, fish can sometimes live for a very long time with it; in some (rare) cases, it will just dissappear on its own.

While dropsey itsself isn't contageous, it usually results as a secondary effect from something else... organ failure, internal parasites, bacteria, etc.

So, while dropsey isn't likely to spread directly, whatever caused it may, spreading it indirectly.
