Man, this is just awful to me. I have had my tank for over 3 years with minimal loss of life (except for old age) and now I seem to be having problems...
I had a platy die the other day. I don't know what happened but I had her for 3 years, I don't know what the lifespan is of a platy. But she was fine...then she was dead.
Now I have a guppy who I thought was pregnant. I put her up in the breeders net cause she was being chased around. The plan was to set up my fry tank again (I haven't had it set up since we moved cause we haven't had any fry), let it run for about 2 weeks then put her over there. Then suddenly the scales on her big stomach started poking out. Now I know it's dropsy. She tries to eat but doesn't get much. Last night she had a huuuge string hanging out of her...the end of it was black and the rest of it was clear. It stayed attached to her for awhile and I guess it finally fell off last night while the light was out.
I was in my lfs yesterday and was telling him about her. He said since she is older (she is 2 years) that dropsy just happens sometimes and she probly isn't contagious. I have never heard of this before? I have since moved her to another tank and I am treating the tank she was in with Macaryn 2, just in case. (After a 30% water change.)
Has anyone heard of Dropsy in an old fish? I have never had a fish with Dropsy, is there anything I can do? The man at my lfs said to just let her go or she would swell up again in a week and die anyways. I don't want to prolong it. But I do wonder if that isn't what killed my Platy. She wasn't swollen or anything...was just belly up under the bubble wand :(
