Okay, i am completely new to the fish thing so don't laugh at me...
Several times a day (and night) i notice a long string looking thing coming out the back of some of my fish (platys). What the heck is it? I thought it was fish poop and then i thought maybe it was eggs and then i thought i'd better ask someone who knows....anyone???

What colour is it? If it is brown, then most likely it is just poop. Having that means that you are overfeeding. Post back with the colour and I can most likely help you.

Since when does having a fish poop mean your overfeeding?

Having a fish poop doesn't mean your overfeeding, just when it hangs from your fish for an unusually long period of time does it mean you are overfeeding.
Also Tlaney, it couldn't be eggs, because platies are livebearers.

well, it looks dark ...didn't get close enough to inspect. and since it cannot be eggs i am not so worried now.
as for over feeding... i have a 5 year old that likes to feed the fishies...lol

My thought is that it could be poop.
You might want to teach your child how much to feed the fish and when, so then your fish aren't going to be overfed.
