dying snails

I can never keep snails alive in my tank longer than a month or two. At first they're there, and then they dissappear. Then after a while I find an empty shell. Are they that sensitive to water conditions? I mean, none of my fish seemed to be interested in eating the snails, so I figure they die on their own.

I've only had little snails - ones that either came with my plants, or I picked off the side of the tank at the petstore when no one's looking (little brown ones that are not for sale, but are just kinda there, prolly arrived to the store with the plants). I really like having a snail or two in my tank - I find it somewhat entertaining waching them go at the sides of the tank with that radula.

Are bigger snails generally hardier than small ones? If I buy a big snail and put it in my tank, would it survive better than small ones? Also, what snails do the least damage to plants? The little brown snails I've had didn't bother the plants at all, pretty much - the cories did more damage than the snails.

i wonder if it's the chemical you add to the tank that kills them.
i know that some algae controller may kill snails -- so not sure if that's the reason.

i figured my oto's eat my plants too... whereas my snails don't really do much damage to them.

Hrm, never tried adding algea controller stuff. The only chemicals I use are tap conditioner when I change water, and umm...that's pretty much it. I add medicine rarely because my fish don't get sick that often at all, at least not in the last few months *knocks on wood, not to jinx it* ;) Hrm, I do have a rather low pH of about 6, but if its constant, it shouldn't bother them, right? I mean the fish don't mind it, why would the snails?

mcshell, just curious, what kind of snails do you have?

I had the same problems with mystery snails. Except they dont dissappear, they just stop coming out of their shell. I dont know what happened? At first, they are active... then a few days later, they just stay in their shell, dead.

oh my, they are tiny. Transparent shell looks quite soft too, is that as big as they grow? Hrm, the snails I had are a different species though, I think mine were just common brown viviparidae, or whatever. But little ones, just over .5 cm approximately.

I was just going to get 2 snails today for my algae. 1 gold mystery snail and one black mystery snail for each of my ten gallon tanks, but I read that they are sensitive to salt in the water and I do have a little salt in them. I don't know how sensitive they are to it though.
