Okay guys, short of hiring this insane lady that moves my three fish tanks to my new house, what is the best way to move a 55gallon, a 45 gal, and a 40 gal tank setup? I was thinking about putting the fish in seperate 30 gallon containers as per their tanks. The trip to my new house is about an hour from where I currently live. Would this work? Do I need to heat the water some how or would they be okay?

Should be fine, use a rubbermaid container those work well too. I'd like to say they'd be ok heat wise in the car but i'm not sure...in Idaho i'm sure the weather is not the best right now.

I would get some of those battery powered airstones though, just to give something to the fish while moving and not have stagnant water.

i would think they'll be ok temp-wise, since you'll probably have the heat running for yourself in the car! just obviously don't leave them out in the cold! :D

good luck! i'm not looking forward to moving my fish even down the road in the future, lol!

Also, dont forget to keep your substrate wet with the tank water. Idealy you want to keep all of your beneficial bacteria in tact so you can quickly cycyle your tanks at the new house, and get your fish back in their respective homes.

The filter media being kept wet is what's important - the substrate actually has very little bacteria held in it, so simply keeping the substrate wet will not be enough to cycle the tank once it's filled up again. It certainly helps when added with the existing filter media, but on its own isn't much help at all.

An hour drive isn't long at all - fish have survived shipping from all over the country and overseas, often taking days. It should be more than warm enough if they're in your car, unless you drive in an ice-cold car ;) Even the air stones aren't really necessary, but if you're worried about it, it certainly doesn't hurt.
