Can anyone advise me on how long it would take the canister (or more accurately the bacteria) to turn anaerobic and poisonous following any kind of power outage?
I've seen reports ranging from 1 hour to 12 hours in various places - does anyone know anything more accurate? or can speak from experience?
Would fitting a UV filter on the return pipe make this any less fatal for the fish?
btw I have a 30 gallon coldwater, plantless set up.
thanks in advance

Mine has been off for around an hour, and I didn't seem to lose any bacteria
if yer power is out longer than that just take the media out, and keep it in oxygenated water in a bucket, oxygenated means replace the water every half hour or so.

Somonas is pretty darn close. There is no absolute answer. It's all relative to your filter and your conditions. You can usually get away with a couple hours. Much more than that, and you will be pressing your luck.

Bacteria will die due to oxygen starvation.

If this is a concern, say your electric company is ghetto, buy an APC Back-Ups. They work great, and will extend the life of your equipment.

much obliged guys!

my nightmare scenario is that we get a 3+ hours power failure in the night and I awake to find the whole tank dead. This kind of risk goes with the territory for canister filters I guess.

wonder if I can find a trip switch that will not allow the canister to restart once the power returns.....

thanks again.

I have all my aquarium filters, wet/dry pump, emperors,
whispers, and Eheim 2028 pro II all on UPS back ups....
and if I have extended outages, i.e. hurricanes, I bought
a electric portable generator for the home.
If it were not for the aquariums, I could just light a candle.

Are you talking UPS as in the computer terminology? Have you ever tested it and if so, how much service did it give you?
My set up is far too small to justify the cost of a generator.
thanks for the feedback.
